Shylock: Shakespeare and the 'Jewish Problem'
Given the fact that there were no Jews in Elizabethan England, is it possible to charge Shakespeare with anti-Semitism? If not, why did he choose to depict his money-lending usurer as a Jew when so many of his contemporary Christian Englishmen were practising a trade forbidden by the scriptures? And if so, why he provide Shylock with such emotionally defensive speeches?
