Yedid Nefesh: What Are We Singing?
Rabbi Eliezer Azkiri's 16th century mystical poem Yedid Nefesh is sung in synagogues around the world, both on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons, yet few of us consider its meaning when we sing it. Heavily informed by the Song of Songs, it employs deeply intimate and anthropomorphic language in its expression of religious devotion. Given its history of censorship and textual corruption, are we even reading what Rabbi Azkiri wrote?
Note that this session is expected to run for 75 minutes.
